Windsurfing: Felixstowe-Dip Wind Direction: E Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Rollers + chop Air Temperature: 15 Sea Temperature: 17 Weather: sun Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Got down a bit before 11 to see Squiz shooting off downwind on 7.5m. I got
7m ready to rig then the wind looked like it had dropped and the yachts
were not healing over quite so much in the onshore wind. Gambled and rigged
8.5m as arrivals sat to watch the entertainment as I tried to launch in the
shore dump, and probably overpowered. Got a lucky break in the break and
bobbed straight out avoiding the groynes before bearing off. I flattened
the 8.5m and it was a lot less windy that it looked with 8-8.5m about
right. Sea was big for the light wind, and looked weird; usually I the sea
is that big and choppy in 5-6m weather. Sailing broad and along the
troughs was great and gybes came off OK after a couple of falls: the 135l
is much easier in these conditions that the 145l I used to have.
The sea was very nice with some big rollers and I made my way eventually
over to the spit, and sat and chatted there for a while. I did not fancy
landing back at the Dip as the shoredump was bad at high tide. Sea was
smooth between the rollers by the spit and some very nice runs, and felt
strange surfing down the wave fronts with 8.5m!
Eventually made my way back to the Dip where shore dump was not too bad
after high tide. Wind started to drop when Mark turned up, as always, so
let the sail fill a bit and had some more nice runs. Probably had 2.5hrs
on the water plus some rests for warming cups of tea as I started to get
cold in my shorty. Eight others out and six kiters, and it was the best
day I've had in a sea that size with 8.5m. Ian said it was a miserable
time for him and I guess it was one of those days where if the sail was too
big or small the sea took over and made sailing hard.
